The Surfing Florida Museum opens a permanent home on South Dixie
Free hours on South Dixie, a $79 million pair rising at Lake Lytal, and a lettuce recall that reached Florida shelves.
After years of pop-ups, the Surfing Florida Museum has a permanent address: 7623 S. Dixie Highway, in the Shoppes at Palm Coast plaza in south West Palm Beach. It's in the northwest corner behind Pollo Tropical, one block north of Trader Joe's; exterior construction has the sign temporarily down, so go by the landmarks. Hours are noon to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday, admission free with a $5 suggested donation. The collection grew out of the Palm Beach County Surfing History Project, which has mounted 45 pop-up exhibits and acquired 72 visual and written history panels from Florida Atlantic University. Gift-shop proceeds support the nonprofit, and a related photographic-history exhibit runs through October at the county history museum.
Recalled iceberg lettuce in the Cyclospora outbreak was distributed in Florida
Federal investigators have tied a multistate Cyclospora outbreak to recalled iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico by Taylor Farms de Mexico, and Florida is on the distribution list. The recall covers Marketside iceberg salad and shredded lettuce in specified sizes with Best if Used By dates from July 18 through August 3; check the FDA notice for the full brand, lot and date list before you clear the crisper. The FDA says to avoid every product on the recall, discard it, and clean and sanitize anything it touched. A border sample announced earlier turned out to be a false positive, which does not change the recall. The nine-state case cluster stands at 1,947 illnesses and 98 hospitalizations with no deaths; Florida is not among those nine states.
Missing 10-year-old located safe in Tennessee
West Palm Beach police say Thiago A. Lopez Velasquez, the 10-year-old reported missing over the weekend, was located safe in Tennessee. He was last seen around 5 p.m. Saturday in the 2200 block of 45th Street, and police had believed he was traveling with his 28-year-old aunt in a silver 2025 Toyota RAV4. No further details about the disappearance or how he was found were immediately released.
$79 million in new construction is aimed at a January 2027 opening at Lake Lytal
Two builds at Lake Lytal Park are tracking toward a side-by-side opening in January 2027. The YMCA of the Palm Beaches' $43 million Community Center and Skate Park is planned as a 55,000-square-foot, two-story building with a nearly 30,000-square-foot skate park, a youth engagement and resource center, educational, career and mental-health counseling, a recording studio, STEM lab, art studio and a Palm Beach State College workforce-development hub. Next door, the county's $36 million Lake Lytal Park Aquatic Center is planned around a 72-meter competition pool, a 13-foot dive well and a 6,200-square-foot zero-depth aquatic play zone with capacity for 205. The Y leases about five acres for $10 a year on a 50-year renewable agreement and will manage the aquatic center.
An hour with Njideka Akunyili Crosby at the Norton
Wednesday afternoon, the Norton hosts A Closer Look: Njideka Akunyili Crosby, a guided session on the artist and her works in the exhibition Recognition of Art by Women: In Retrospect. Quincy Bruckerhoff leads it from 1 to 2 p.m. at 1450 S. Dixie Highway. The talk runs on regular museum admission and is free for members, but space is limited and online registration is required, so handle that before you head down rather than at the door.
